Our Good Friend & Our Member Eric Funny Vitebsk Trip Report.

Our Good Friend Eric Has An Interesting Experience To Share Concerning His Time Spent In Vitebsk Belarus. Eric Was Visiting His Special Lady, Had Some Interesting Experiences. Thanks For Sharing With Us Eric!

Greg, I rather find this enjoyable to relive these moments looking back. Do with them as you see fit. Tell me to stop anytime.

The city of Vitebsk is a most interesting place to see. Amazingly clean and neat. Not a cigarette butt to be seen on the ground anywhere.

Just don't pick up the branches of the many potted bushes and look underneath.?? Funny what you learn when you observe people.

I lived a good portion of my life during the cold war. Remember well seeing Mikhail Gorbachev on television for the first time. My immediate thought was a bird had pooped on him. Found out that thought was not uncommon over there either.

Thus, I had a few preconceived notions before my trips over. Greg reassured me my thoughts were unfounded. Ounce there I relaxed very quickly, forgetting about my apprehensions.

On that first trip I discovered a small park with a very large obelisk in the center. A nice circle blacktop road went all the way around with park benches. On the far end was memorial and graves of unknown soldiers killed in action in that area.

Big yellow stone building on one side, and another on the other side. Nice cozy little park, I would walk through headed down to the river.

I noticed license plates on cars there from all over. Naturally the cars were different as well so I used my phone and took lots of pictures of everything. Never giving it much thought.

Then on my second trip over, Olga and I walked thru the park together. She invited me to sit on the steps of the yellow building with her. Naturally I did so.

She asked me if I knew where I was. I was clueless naturally. She said " This building is the Vitebsk Branch of the KGB, our security service"

My heart dropped like a rock." Oh my God I'm not supposed to be here, Olga, I'm an American your get me arrested and Jailed!"

" Nobody cares Eric, Nobody even Cares your here, further they never did, they have much better things to do than bother worrying about you"

I was trying to wrap my brain around this. I said " I know what the KGB is, it's not good"

" I know what you have been told" she said. " I brought you here to see for yourself, they know your here, they couldn't care less"

Then she asked me a curious question. " Do you think you as a citizen could sit on the steps of your CIA, in your country?"

We both knew that answer. I walked to supper that night with a lot to think about.

Olga is a very intelligent woman. She knew she had to show me the truth. Knowing in advance, I would never have believed her any other way.

I am glad she did that for me now.

Nice You're Not Afraid To Get Out And Explore Vitebsk. Thanks Bud!

On my second trip over to Vitebsk, I discovered a large Walmart like store under a large glass pyramid a distance from the motel.

This store had everything, dried fish, fresh sushi, baked goods, every kind of alcoholic beverage you can imagine, milk, cheese, and even a mysterious product called Kiefer.

My first trip of every day was to get a couple cinnamon style rolls, and a large plastic jug of milk. Then sit by the bridge and feed the various birds, and watch the people go by on their daily routines.

About my 3rd day of this I got a real shock. I opened my milk and took a drink and got a mouth full of sour thick vinegar milk. ??

I threw it away as being bad. ??

I Identified milk very simply, given I couldn't read the label. It was a white jug with a cow on it. Made sense to me.??

I mentioned it to Olga next time we met and gave her a description. She listened looking puzzled by my description. Then broke out in laughter with a huge smile.

Thus I was introduced to Kiefer. Believe it or not this is quite nutritious for a person. Assuming you can swallow it anyway.??

Milk has blue letters on the jug, Keifer has red letters on identical jug. The cow is actually on both.??

Once I got past the mental block of it being rotten milk, I really do like it.??

The best memories are made, when you leave home.??

Our Good Friend Eric Sent Us Another Funny, During His Time With His Special Lady In Vitebsk.

Greg, here is my next cute memory from Vitbesk.......Eric

To any man considering this Journey, be ready mentally and miscommunications can be beneficial.��

As I have written before, I explored the city alone in my free time. Naturally unable to read Cyrillic (Russian) letters, and knowing 3 words of Russian made that rather interesting.��

Unable to read signs, I would step into various stores as if looking for something. Then turn and leave just as quickly if it wasn't interesting.

Obviously a foreigner, shop keepers probably believed I was lost, giving me a brief glance and nothing more.

Rational assumption based up assessment of the moment.��

In a small grocery store, I noticed something I'd not seen since childhood......Figs, sweet soft Figs. I promptly put several large scoops in a plastic bag.

To understand what happened next we must step back to when I was a child. Figs in any quantity have laxative properties in people.

My father and I for unknown reasons never suffered from this effect. They were always a great snack on the farm, sometimes a pocketful was your meal while operating equipment.

In my teen years figs disappeared from store shelves. Thus my delight in finding them.��

Forward to my nice bag in the Belorussian grocery store....��

Approaching the counter to pay, the older lady looked at the bag. Then looked back at me rather concerned. She said nothing, but her expression said everything.

" I don't think this foreigner realizes what hes buying, hes going to ruin his vacation, but I don't know how to tell him that"��

My instant thought at her expression was to use hand gestures to assure her that concern was unnecessary. I already knew.��

That demonstration would really fly well in a grocery store full of people. Now what?

Thinking fast, I pointed at the bag and rubbed my stomach with the other hand. Then shook my head " No"��

She smiled and relaxed for a moment, then got another puzzled look on her face. It read.....

" If your not eating them, what are going to do with them?" Then just as quickly she visibly dismissed the whole idea.

She handed me my change, and I went on my way.��

Was it miscommunication, or a flat out lie. I lied to her really. But when you don't speak each others language, and charades of truth would be grossly inappropriate. It was the best alternative.

There are times, that's all your left with.��

Greg, here is one of my best memories of my time in Vitbesk.

To anyone considering this journey. Don't fear the language barrier, think of language as simply a different set of human grunts and whistles.��

There are other ways to communicate. Like I did in a restaurant....

All by myself.��

During my free time in Vitbesk, I explored much of the city within walking distance of the motel. I picked a direction and went to see what I might find.

I chose a table in a restaurant, but the waitress didn't speak English. Apparently others there didn't either.

The poor young waitress looked absolutely lost. Having no idea what to do.

I took a plate and using my hands showed her the shape of a steak and the thickness. She watched intently.

Then I really gave her a shock, I looked her right in the eye and " Moo".....

She understood completely. Looked around quick to see if others were watching. Her look said she expected to see television cameras and laughing crowds. Caught her completely off guard.��

Seeing no one, she smiled and started laughing. She said " Nyet, Oink!"

I gave her a thumbs up and big smile. Pork was just fine.�� Very good meal as I recall.

I haven't seen her since on my return trips. But I bet she remembers it and smiles just like I do. ��

That was several years ago. Now English is more widespread among locals. In a way, I wish it wasn't, it more fun the other way. ��

This Festival Is Sort-Of Dedicated To "The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow."

You Remember The Legend About The Headless Horseman.

The Festival Is About Carving Pumpkins To Produce All Kinds Of Scary Objects, In The Fun Atmosphere of Halloween And The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow.

Dave Spent The Day. He Carved 10 Of The Pumpkins, Used In Some Of The Pumpkin Art Photos Below.

He Says The Experience Was Lots Of Fun, Enjoyable, And Busy With All The Pumpkin Carving Going On.

Sleepy Hollow Is A Village Located Not Far From Croton.

Makes The Whole "Sleepy Hollow" Theme All The More Enjoyable For Adults And Kids.
